Making Tax Digital — Which software are compatible?

The deadline to register for digital self-assessment is nearing; the constant changes in legislation are keeping all business owners on the edge. Recently VAT became applicable to MTD requirements with other categories being planned to be included soon such as income tax. Most accounting software for the year 2021 will be compatible with HMRC’s requirements for MTD (Making Tax Digital). You can always visit the official UK government website to confirm the software compatibilities with MTD; before you decide on which software to buy.

For instance, Quickbooks claims that users can use it for completing and submitting Self Assessments to HMRC. However, on close inspection, our team of expert accountants realised that the reality is quite the opposite; you can only get access to the information HMRC requires from the software. You will have to copy and paste the information onto the online form currently used by HMRC to be able to submit the return.

On the contrary, FreeAgent can directly file tax returns for small businesses and individuals to HMRC and that also in just a few clicks. However, if HMRC decides to completely stop their system for repair or in an emergency, it can interrupt the smooth process for filing tax. It is better to try free trials to get accustomed to the most commonly used features and business requirements.

Our comparison image shows which software are MTD (Making Tax Digital) compliant and which ones are not.
